Undergraduate Studies
ADMISSION AT THE UNIVERSITY
The capacity of the university student is gained through enrollment at a Higher Education Institute and is lost with the issuing of the degree (par. 1, article 29, Law 1268/1982).
In accordance with Ministerial Decisions: a) Φ152/Β6/198, article 1 and b) Φ253/Β6/1340, article 4, those eligible for submitting an application to be admitted to a higher education institute are the following: a) holders of a secondary education graduation certificate from a day Unified Upper Secondary School (Eniaio Lykeio) or day Unified Ecclesiastical Upper Secondary School or an Upper Secondary School of a different type than that of the Unified Upper Secondary School or Greek Unified Upper Secondary School abroad or Foreign Highschool operating in Greece or abroad, when the title they provide allows the holder the right to be admitted at Universities of the Country whose curriculum the specific school adopts, b) holders of a graduation certificate from an Evening Unified Upper Secondary School which fulfils the conditions of section b, paragraph 1, article 2 of Law 2525/1997, as it has been replaced by paragraph 2 of article 1 of Law 2929/2001, and c) holders of an International Highschool Certificate.
There are also special categories of candidates who have the right to be admitted to a Greek Higher Education Institute under certain conditions. These include the following: children of Greeks living abroad who graduated from Greek upper secondary schools, children of Greek employees working for Greek public services abroad or International Organisations, which Greece is a member of, who are graduates of Greek upper secondary schools, Greek graduates of foreign highschools or relevant schools operating abroad (see website of Greek Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs), foreign citizens of foreign nationality (see website of Ministry), students who receive scholarships from the Greek state who have foreign citizenship and nationality or foreign citizenship and Greek nationality, Cypriots. A decision of the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs (see Ministry website) determines the conditions of inclusion in these special categories, the percentage of admission per category, the necessary documents, the selection processes, the way of examination and the relevant procedures in case of special entry examinations, the examined courses, the marking procedure, possible minimum admission average, the necessary individual and collective documents for the exams and the issuing of results and selection of candidates, the Schools and Departments of access per category, the examined courses when there is a special examination, gravity coordinates for each course and any relevant details (par. a & b, article 4, Law 2909/2001 7 & Ministerial Decision Φ151151/17104/Β6/ΦΕΚ 259/τ β΄/2006).
Moreover, the following categories of candidates can register as extra admissions at any School of the Greek Higher Education Institutes they wish up to a percentage of 3% for each School, under the conditions and limitations of section b, par. 1, article 4 of Law 1771/1998, in accordance to which admission of the deaf or blind is allowed at any School apart from those schools where due to the nature of the science, attendance is difficult for them as stated by a justified decision of the School approved by the Senate and announced before the beginning of the academic year (article 12 of Law 2640/98, par. 8, article 6 of 3027/2002, par. 10, article 12 of Ministerial Decision Φ152/Β6/198). These categories include: candidates suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, heavy vascular dysplasia of the brain stem, malignant growths (leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumours), Bund Chiari syndrome, Fabry disease, heavy fibrocystic disease (pancreas, lungs), multiple sclerosis, heavy myasthenia gravis and receiving pharmaceutical treatment, kidney failure treated with dialysis, hereditary haemorrhagic diathesis-haemophilias undergoing treatment with coagulation factors, those who have underwent a bone marrow transplant or transplant of the cornea, heart, liver, lungs, those suffering from insulin-dependent juvenile-onset diabetes type 1, Evans syndrome, thalassemia and receiving multiple transfusions, blind candidates, deaf candidates, those suffering from thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, hereditary hydrocephaly with permanent bypass (shunt) accompanied by other problems such as arachnoid cyst with phenomena of epileptic crisis, those with movement problems due to a disability of over 67%, those suffering from phenylketonouria (PKU), hereditary thrombophilia and receiving anticoagulant therapy for life, arrythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia with implanted defibrillator, as well as those suffering from Gaucher disease.
According to par. g of article 46 of Law 1946/91, candidates belonging to the above categories have to prove their problem through a certificate of the primary health committee of their prefecture, after a free-of-charge certificate issued by a medical doctor who has the relevant specialization and is a member of the Teaching Scientific Staff of a Greek University.
